We are used to seats being generally harder and beds more comfortable. Everyone has slept on an old sofa bed that made them sore in the morning. But nowadays you can get a pretty fantastic sofa-bed that is comfortable during the day and overnight.
English uses the term “sofa bed” for these, while Slovenian has stuck with “sofa bed”, but there are many more seating solutions than just sofa beds. There are also sofa sets whose backrest turns into part of the mattress and sofa sets that can be largely disassembled and reassembled into another form. And three, as we have mostly with FEYDOM, sets made up of elements that move or conspire to move into other positions.
So we’ll just call them seat-beds, so as not to invent new words.
The global trend shows that seat-beds are increasingly popular for several reasons:
Sofas, which can be turned into a bed, are designed in such a way that they can be changed in a few moves, allowing daily changes in functionality. Often, storage space can be found underneath the sofa.
Such beds come in handy in homes where we need an extra bed, either permanently or just for temporary sleeping. They are most popular with those who have frequent visitors or people from abroad. They are also great for smaller, multifunctional spaces.
Seating that is also good as a bed must have the qualities of both products. This means that they must offer sufficient support to sit and sleep comfortably. Where does the difference come in?
Basically, the difference in composition and choice of materials for quality sofas and beds is quite small. Beds and seating are generally made of a combination of springs and polyurethane foam. Seating can also be found composed only of foam of different densities in different layers. The main difference between springs and foam is that springs are slightly more durable in the long term, especially if we are talking about pocket springs, where each spring is protected by a special layer.
The final softness of both the bed and the seat is determined by the combination of all the layers. Of course, it depends on the individual as to what suits him or her better – either softer or harder.
Every two-in-one design has a focus on how a single thing can be used in multiple ways. Thus, the sofa serves well as a bed, as its internal structure supports the shoulders, hips and lower back to ensure a good night’s sleep. Additionally, such a mattress also offers more comfort than a seating mattress.
Whether it’s guests staying after a party, guests staying for several days, or even guests planning to stay for several months, a sofa-bed solution will be ideal as it can be converted from a sofa to a bed and vice versa in less than a minute. This way, even the smallest of spaces can be transformed into multifunctional spaces, where the bed turns into a seating area in the morning for socialising during the day, and back into a bed in the evening.
An additional thing that seat-beds allow us to do is to combine colours. Beds are usually only available in very limited colour combinations. Two-in-one solutions, however, give you the possibility to choose your own colour (and even material) for your “bed”, so you can really add your own “Je ne sais quoi” to the space and create a distinctive feel and feel in your home.
Of course, it all depends on your preference. The fact is that some people prefer harder seats and mattresses, others prefer softer ones. Some people prefer a hard seat and a soft mattress. For others, it is the other way round. Some have back problems, others have stomach acid problems. Some sleep exclusively on their backs, others sleep even if they are half hanging out of bed. Everyone has their own preferences, so we recommend that you first check if the sofa beds suit you (beware: they also differ from one another).
